Brickwork
Cleaning
In Poole, Bournemouth, Dorset, Hampshire & Wiltshire.
Mr Softwash is run by Steve Taylor. I have over 30 years experience in the pressure and soft washing industry and specialise in transforming brickwork, stonework with professional soft washing, ensuring your property remains beautiful and long-lasting.
Brickwork cleaning starts by removing loose dirt and then wetting the surface. Use softwash chemicals, working in small sections from the top down. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove all residue. For stubborn stains, a biocide solution can be used, but always pre-wet the bricks and test on an inconspicuous area first. Avoid using wire brushes or high-pressure washing, as these can damage the brick and mortar.
General Cleaning Steps
1. Preparation:
Wear gloves and safety goggles. Gather a soft-bristled brush, a bucket, soap, water, and a hose.
2. Wet the Brick:
Use a garden hose to thoroughly wet the bricks to loosen dirt and prevent the cleaning solution from soaking in too deeply.
3. Apply Cleaner:
Mix dish soap with warm water in a bucket and apply it to the brick using a bristle brush. Alternatively, make a paste of dish soap, baking soda, and water and apply it.
4. Scrub:
Gently scrub the brick surface in sections, working your way from the top of the wall down.
5. Rinse:
Thoroughly rinse the area with clean water to remove soap residue.
6. Tough Stains:
For organic stains like algae or mildew, apply a fungicidal cleaner after the initial cleaning, let it dry for the recommended time, and then wash it off.
Important Considerations
Gentle First:
Always start with the mildest cleaning method, such as water and a brush, before moving to stronger solutions.
Pre-Wetting:
Before using any cleaning agent, pre-wet the brick to prevent the cleaner from absorbing into the brick's pores.
Avoid Harsh Tools:
Never use wire brushes or high-pressure washing, as these can damage the surface and mortar.
Work in Sections:
Clean the brickwork in small, manageable sections to ensure thorough rinsing and prevent residue buildup.
Check for Damage:
Before you begin, inspect the brickwork for cracks and repair them to prevent water penetration.

soft washing brickwork
Soft washing is the
recommended and safest method for cleaning brickwork because it effectively removes dirt and organic growth without the risk of permanent damage caused by high-pressure washing. High pressure can erode the brick face and mortar joints, leading to structural problems and water penetration issues.
What is Soft Washing Brickwork?
Soft washing uses a low-pressure application of specialized cleaning solutions, such as biodegradable biocides and detergents, to safely remove stains, grime, and organic matter (like algae, moss, and lichen). The cleaning solution is applied at a pressure similar to a garden hose, so the chemicals do the work rather than the force of the water.
Key Benefits over Pressure Washing
- Prevents Damage: High pressure can cause irreversible damage to porous brick and mortar, while soft washing preserves the structural integrity and appearance of the surface.
- Longer-Lasting Results: The chemical solutions penetrate the porous surface of the brick to kill organic growth at its root, which provides a deeper and longer-lasting clean compared to pressure washing, which only removes surface-level contaminants.
- Safe for Various Stains: Soft washing is effective at removing a variety of stains, including general dirt, atmospheric pollutants, and efflorescence (white salt deposits).
- Eco-Friendly: The cleaning solutions used in professional soft washing are often pH-neutral and biodegradable, making them safe for the environment and, once dry, safe for children and pets.
The Soft Washing Process
The general process for soft washing brickwork involves the following steps:
- Inspection: A professional will first inspect the brickwork to identify the type of stain and the condition of the masonry to select the appropriate cleaning solution.
- Preparation: Surrounding areas, including plants and vulnerable entry points for water, are protected.
- Application: A specialised cleaning solution (e.g., a sodium hypochlorite based product with a surfactant) is applied to the brickwork at low pressure, using a sprayer or a soft-bristled brush.
- Dwell Time: The solution is left to dwell on the surface to break down the grime and kill organic growth.
- Rinsing: The surface is then gently rinsed with clean, low-pressure water to remove the cleaning agent and debris.
For best and safest results, it is recommended to use a trained professional, as they have the expertise to select the correct chemicals and methods for different types of brickwork.
Brickwork cleaning
Different types of brick stains require specific cleaning methods to avoid damaging the brickwork. It is crucial to identify the source of the discolouration before starting, and to test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first
. A mild detergent with a stiff nylon brush is the safest starting point for general dirt and grime.
General cleaning
For standard dirt, grime, and atmospheric pollution, start with the gentlest approach.
- Method: Mix a mild detergent with warm water. Using a stiff-bristled brush (never wire), scrub the brickwork in sections. Rinse thoroughly with a hose, using a gentle spray setting to avoid pushing water deeper into the porous brick.
- For tougher grime: You can use a power washer on a low-pressure setting and at a distance, as long as the bricks are new and in good condition. High pressure can damage older or softer bricks and their mortar joints.
Removing efflorescence (white, powdery residue)
This common issue is caused by salts that dissolve in water and are left behind as the moisture evaporates. It is generally harmless and often weathers away over time.
- Method: For removal, start by dry-brushing the salt deposits with a stiff nylon brush. For persistent marks, a damp sponge can be used sparingly, but avoid over-saturating the area, which can cause more salts to surface.
- Chemical option: A brick acid cleaner can be used for tough efflorescence, but always pre-wet the brick, follow the instructions carefully, and wear appropriate protective gear.
Cleaning organic growth (moss, algae, lichen)
These growths thrive in damp, shaded areas. Address the source of the dampness if possible.
- Method: Scrape or brush off loose growth first. Apply a surface biocide or fungicidal cleaner to kill the remaining organic matter at the root. Apply during dry weather for best results.
- Alternative: A solution of vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution can also be effective.
Removing mortar and cement stains
Fresh mortar is best removed after it has hardened slightly, using a wooden tool to avoid scratching the brick face.
- Method: For smears and deposits, use a specialist cement cleaning product, which is often hydrochloric-acid-based. Follow the directions carefully, pre-wet the brickwork, and rinse thoroughly.
Removing paint
Paint removal is a complex process and is often best handled by a professional, as the method depends on the paint type and the age of the brick.
- Method: For fresh paint, blot up as much as possible before using a solvent and washing with detergent. For dry paint, carefully scrape it off before applying a paint remover suitable for masonry.
Important precautions
- Avoid wire brushes: Metal tools can damage the brick face and leave behind metallic particles that can cause rust stains.
- Test first: Always test a cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it will not damage or stain the brick.
- Protect yourself: When using chemical cleaners, always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and goggles.
- Watch the weather: Avoid cleaning in freezing conditions. The water in the bricks can freeze, expand, and cause damage.
- Rinse thoroughly: Always rinse the cleaned area completely to prevent chemical residue from causing further damage or staining.

I cannot recommend Steve at Mr Softwash Ltd highly enough. A very professional job done on our patio - paving slabs which hadn’t been cleaned for 4-5 years! They now look amazing and no mess left. My request for a quote was responded to quickly and he turned up at the date and time he said he would. Very happy customer 😊

We got in touch with Steve after an accident with a large pot of green fence paint that exploded all over our block paved driveway! All 3 areas look brand new, the paint has completely gone and its transformed the outside of our little house. Can’t rate Steve’s service highly enough. Professional, friendly and he’s done a brilliant job. Thank you!
